Junior members from SNHDCTA gathered at UNH on March 29th for an equine leg care and leg wrapping clinic.
Jennifer Dunton’s one hour lecture and two hour hands-on clinic allowed several junior riders to learn from Mrs. Dunton’s years of experience teaching at UNH and at various facilities on the east coast.
She holds degrees in equine management and equine science from UNH. Stephanie Grant, this year’s SNHDCTA junior representative, arranged for and organized this clinic as a hands-on experience for junior riders.
The lecture covered equine anatomy and physiology as it pertains to horse leg care and wrapping.
Many types of wraps (including when each is appropriate) were described and the advantages of proper wrapping and disadvantages of poor wrapping technique were discussed.
The do’s and don’t of wrapping expertise were an important part of the lecture. Specific bandage types described were polo, exercise, stable, pressure, sweat, poultice, and figure eight wraps.
Additional topics included information about bell boots, splint boots, and ankle boots. Following the lecture, the junior riders benefited from a hands-on clinic in the UNH barn.
Braving cold temperatures they were shown wrapping procedures for several types of wraps and then were allowed to practice on some of the UNH horses.
Thanks to Jennifer Dunton for a most informative and useful clinic.
Special thanks to Karin Denhard for all her help in organizing this clinic for SNHDCTA junior riders and her beneficial knowledge into the art of wrapping.

Junior members in attendance were, SNHDCTA junior representative, Stephanie Grant, Marley Jenkins, Torey Neusch, Megan Predki, Elizabeth Prior, Dylan Walker, and Diane Holt.
I thought the clinic was very good. I had never been to UNH which was cool. Even though it was freezing I had fun and learned a lot. We went out that day and purchased some so we can try the leg wraps at our barn. I am interested in other clinics too. My trainer thought it was a good idea to have clinics like that for junior riders.

I liked when we learned about how to wrap the horses legs in the shipping-boot style because first, it’s helpful when you ship your horse to any type of horse shows and second, it helps keep your horses legs clean and safe from any damage that could be done on the horse trailer! And last of all (my favorite part), you can get ALL SORTS of colors for the outside part of the wrapped leg!!! You can get pink, orange, purple, yellow, green, and my favorite color.... AQUA!!!!!!! But besides all of the fun stuff, I thought that the leg-wrapping clinic was very helpful in learning how to take care of your horses legs when wrapping them!!!!!!!
